Series - Limited Edition Fine Art Prints
The series Suzanne consists of six fine art photographic prints taken in Robichaud, New Brunswick, in November 2013 (Suzanne #1) and March 2016 (remaining prints).
My first encounter with the namesake fishing vessel was near sunset. The late-day light, the rust-streaked hull, the location, and especially the name, immediately brought to mind the line “And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbour” from Leonard Cohen’s poem Suzanne.
Because of cluttered surroundings, as well as heavy damage to the wheelhouse during the winter of 2014-15, most of the photographic work was taken from low angles looking upwards. This removed the background and damaged portions of the boat. It also provided an alternate view, comprised of smaller sections of the hull, which emphasized shape and form.
My preference was to capture Suzanne on mostly clear days with limited, but light and wispy, clouds. The blue trim along the gunwales mirrored the sky, while the remnants of the white paint along the hull, poking through the many streaks of rust, would compliment the clouds. Although the rust stains also matched the orange hues of sunset, most of the work was actually performed in mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
I had considered making this an ongoing project. However, maintenance work, in the form of a fresh coat of white paint on the hull, was begun in the fall of 2016. While this work will help to preserve the vessel for some time, the loss of the rust stains and peeling paint, for me, also means the loss of age and character which can only come from a weathered, and weather-beaten, subject.
Additional photographs of Suzanne may become available as standalone fine art prints in the near future. If so, they will be posted to the Fine Art - Prints gallery.
Prints #2 to #6 of this series were created under the auspices of a Creation "C" Grant from the New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb). The grant provided funding to cover subsistence and other costs associated with my work. My thanks to artsnb for supporting this professional opportunity of mine, and for their continued promotion and support of the arts and artists in New Brunswick.
